Green Roof Drainage and Rainwater Harvesting with Drainage Cell and StormBreaker
A green roof brings vegetation into the built environment while helping manage rainfall where it lands. Connecting its drainage layer to an underground rainwater collection system takes this approach further: excess roof runoff can be collected and stored for suitable reuse.
Yude Rain Eco’s FlowNex Drainage Cell and StormBreaker Modules System can work together to connect rooftop drainage with underground storage, making rainwater management part of the building’s landscape design.
How Drainage Cell Works in a Green Roof
Vegetation and growing substrate retain part of the rainfall received by a green roof. Excess water needs a clear drainage route to the roof outlets.
Installed beneath the filter geotextile, FlowNex Drainage Cell provides an open drainage space that allows excess water to move toward these outlets. The geotextile helps limit the migration of growing-medium particles into the drainage layer.
The black polypropylene panels form a thin, modular layer beneath the planting system. Their role is to convey water; the roof’s waterproofing and root protection are provided by separately specified layers.
In the illustrated arrangement, the drainage cells sit above a continuous geomembrane. The complete roof build-up—including membrane protection, root resistance, insulation and structural support—should be coordinated with the project’s roof design.

Connecting the Roof to StormBreaker Underground Storage
Water reaching the roof outlets travels through rainwater downpipes and connecting drainage pipes to the underground StormBreaker system.
StormBreaker modules form the internal structure of a modular storage tank. For rainwater harvesting, the assembled system is fully enclosed in an impermeable geomembrane, with sealed pipe connections to retain the collected water.
Locating storage underground allows the surface above to remain available for an appropriately designed landscape or other approved use. Tank dimensions, cover depth and loading requirements are determined for each project.
The overall collection route is:
Green roof → Drainage Cell → Roof outlet → Rainwater downpipe → StormBreaker storage tank
Suitable pretreatment, maintenance access and overflow arrangements should be included in the detailed system design.

Two Products with Complementary Roles
Drainage at roof level
FlowNex Drainage Cell provides a route for excess water beneath the growing substrate, supporting the operation of the green roof drainage system.
Storage below ground
StormBreaker provides a modular underground space for collecting roof runoff instead of immediately discharging all available water from the site.
Opportunities for rainwater reuse
With suitable treatment and pumping equipment, stored water can supply landscape irrigation or other approved non-potable applications. Reuse can help reduce reliance on mains water when harvested water is available.
Coordinated stormwater management
The green roof retains part of the rainfall, while the underground tank receives the remaining runoff. Where stormwater attenuation is required, the design must also provide sufficient available storage and appropriate discharge controls.
Designing the System as a Whole
Successful integration starts with the relationship between rainfall, roof drainage, storage capacity and water demand.
Because the green roof retains and uses some rainfall, harvesting calculations should account for its actual runoff characteristics rather than assume that all rainfall reaches the tank. Storage sizing should also consider local rainfall patterns, irrigation demand and overflow management.
Water quality matters too. Green roof runoff can carry fine particles, colour and nutrients from the growing medium. Treatment should therefore suit the intended reuse; neither the drainage cells nor the storage modules replace water-treatment equipment.
Accessible roof outlets, serviceable pretreatment and planned inspection access help keep the complete system maintainable.
